The NEC further announced that Catherine Omanyo, one of the party’s Deputy Secretaries General, will assume the role in an acting capacity pending the election of a substantive office holder.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) National Executive Committee (NEC) has resolved to relieve Secretary General Edwin Sifuna of his responsibilities with immediate effect.

In a statement issued after a meeting held in Mombasa on Wednesday, the party said the decision was reached during a sitting of its top decision-making organ.

“The Party National Executive Committee meeting in Mombasa today has resolved to relieve SG Edwin Sifuna of his responsibilities with immediate effect,” the statement read.

The NEC further announced that Catherine Omanyo, one of the party’s Deputy Secretaries General, will assume the role in an acting capacity pending the election of a substantive office holder.

“Effectively, Hon. Catherine Omanyo, who is one of the Deputy Secretary General, will act in this position until a substantive holder of the office will be elected,” the statement added.

The party did not immediately disclose the reasons behind the decision to remove Sifuna from the influential administrative post.

As Secretary General, Sifuna has been responsible for overseeing the party’s day-to-day operations, coordinating branches, and serving as a key spokesperson on political and policy matters.

The development marks a significant shift within ODM’s leadership structure, coming at a time when political realignments continue to shape the national landscape.

The Secretary General’s office plays a central role in party strategy, grassroots mobilization, and liaison with coalition partners.

ODM has not indicated when the election for a new Secretary General will be conducted, nor whether Sifuna will continue to hold any other position within the party.

Following the death of long serving leader Raila Odinga, the party has grown into two factions, one insisting on remaining in the broadbased government while the other claimed it was in the opposition.

One group led by Oginga has been pushing for a pre-election pact with UDA, while the Sifuna-led group that includes Siaya Governor James Orengo insist that they ought to field a presidential candidate.

Sifuna and Deputy Party Leader Godfrey Osotsi were reportedly absent from the National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting in Mombasa on Wednesday morning.
